The Rasta costume is an outfit made popular by Reggae music and it’s most famous proponent Bob Marley. It is characterized by the dreadlock hairstyle and clothing that features the colors red, gold, green and black. The hair is often left uncut and a Rasta Tam or  hat is used to keep the hair in place. A traditional Tam is knitted and features the Rastafarian colors.

Due to the widespread popularity of Reggae, the Rasta style has gone international. It is not surprising to see dreadlocks all over the world nowadays. The style embodies a laid back, easy going attitude that is appealing to many people. The Rasta costume is the ideal outfit for a Halloween party or any dress up event where you want to “let your hair down”.

The Rasta costume featured here includes oversized foam shirt and vest, cropped pants, hat with foam dreadlocks and the peace-sign necklace. The vest and hat have the distinctive Rasta colors of red, gold and green, while the cropped pants have the same colors as a trim.

Despite the almost cliched look of the Rasta costume nowadays there is a serious side to the dress and the people that wear it. Rasta is short for Rastafarian, a religion that started in Jamaica in the 1930′s.  It is a Christian religion whose principal tenet is that the former Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I is/was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ.

Much of the scriptures have similarities with the new and old testaments of the bible, except they speak from an African point of view. For this reason it is sometimes referred to as an Afro-centric religion.

Two of the most well known and distinctive aspects of the religion are that followers should not cut their hair or beards. This brought about the dreadlock hairstyle that is so popular today. The other, more controversial, aspect is that taking cannabis is viewed as a way to commune with god. Rastafarian’s will smoke cannabis openly and as it was/is illegal this could get them in trouble. Another feature of the cliched Rasta costume is the cannabis leaf pattern or relief on clothing or accessories like necklaces.
